Drought is a long-standing global problem, the world’s arid and semi-arid regionsaccount for about35%of the land area, spread all over more than60countries andregions, with the intensification of global climate change, droughts will become morefrequent. Spatiotemporal characteristics analysis and vulnerability assessment ofregional drought system are very important in the study of drought, help to improve thedrought prevention and mitigation capability. Taking Anhui Province as an example, toexplore the causes of drought based the systematic theory of natural disaster risk, useGIS technology to research the distribution of drought in Anhui, and assess droughtsystem vulnerability of Anhui, made the following main achievements: The spatialdistribution map of drought in last500years in Anhui Province showed that, HuaibeiPlain and the eastern Jianghuai Hilly are the high incidence area of drought (north of theHuaihe River, northern Lu’an, Hefei, Chuzhou), followed by southeast hills area inAnhui Province (southeast Xuancheng and southern Huangshan), the lower are DabieMountains in southwestern Anhui Province and the area along Yangtze River of AnhuiProvince. The agricultural drought vulnerability maps of Anhui Province showed that,Agricultural drought vulnerability of Anhui had a decreasing tendency, reflecting thedrought mitigation capability had been enhanced; Among them, Lu’an, Xuancheng,Chaohu, Huangshan, Anqing and Chuzhou’s vulnerability at a high level, they arebasically mountainous terrain or hills.
