Administrative And Academic: Research Of The Central Geological Survey(1916-1945)

As a basic subject in the modern sciences, geology is very important to the development of society. The central geological survey set up by the government played an important role in the academic establishment of modern geology. As the first set up and the most perfect geological survey research institutions, the central geological survey treated as the model of scientific research institutions of the Republic of China.But in the same time, it’s a Part of the administrative agencies with natural administrative attributes. Therefore, its dual attributes is obvious. From the development history of the central geological survey, the formation of dual attributes due to the discipline nature of geology and the condition of the country in that time. It is reasonable and necessary. The dual attribute complement each other and cannot be separated from each other. As the change of social environment and regime, its dual attribute will have different stresses and the corresponding performance, on the whole,the dual attributes shows the tendency of development.Geology is a basic subject in the modern sciences. The central geological survey played an important role in the development of geological science of the Republic of China. But Compared with its importance, the studies of the central geological survey are too little and simply research it as a scientific research institutions, less considering its administrative attribute.This article mainly use the archives from Academia Sinica in Taiwan,magazines and newspapers of that time and the memoirs of relevant persons to study the history of the central geological survey and its dual attributes.
