| Because of the rich mineral resources in the northwest region of China, the Northwest Branch of the Central Geological Survey was officially established in Lanzhou,Gansu Province in 1943 under the guidance of the National Government’s policy to develop the Northwest China and the special needs of the War of Resistance against Japan and the need for a new nation. There were seven departments under the Central Geological Survey, and the division of labor was clear, which was the guarantee for the normal operation of the Northwest Branch of the Central Geological Survey. However, the current situation of lack of talents made the boundaries between the departments not clear. After the establishment of the Northwest Branch,it has been consistent with the work of the main office in terms of investigation direction, and there are more cooperative relationships with other institutions. In addition, the shortage of funds has affected the work of the Northwest Branch to a certain extent. However, despite the shortage of staff and financial constraints, the Northwest Branch of the Central Geological Survey has achieved many achievements: it has produced a 1:200,000 geological map of some parts of Gansu Province and a detailed geological map of special areas;it has investigated the mineral resources of key areas and the geology and stratum of related areas, collected a large number of specimens and studied them accordingly;it had participated in the Qilian Mountain Survey, becoming the first geological survey team in China to cross the Qilian Mountain. These results are undoubtedly a historical accumulation of exploration and development of resources in the Northwest China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the name and affiliation of the Northwest Branch of the Central Geological Survey had changed several times, and there have been split and integrated in the organizational structure, but its contribution to the investigation of geological and mineral resources in the Northwest China had a positive effect on the construction of the industrial system of the People’s Republic of China. |
