The environmental safety of drinking water source area is directly related to the development of social economy and the human health. It has been a focus issue to keep security of drinking water in source area and improve water quality of upstream source site.In this paper, the water quality was reviewed by integrate pollution index method in9monitoring sites in a drinking water source area in Shanghai. The yearly variation trend and exposure risk were investigated. The correlation of the ions of precipitations to water quality, the ions balance of precipitations and variation before,during and after precipitations were compared in one year. The NO2concentration and its correlation to nitrogen-containing pollutants were investigated and the impact of nitrogen deposition on water quality in drinking water sources areas was discussed. In addition, the influence of upstream on water quality in water sources areas was studied. Results indicated that the exposure of main water pollutants were acceptable and the maxmum pollutants were chromium and ammonia. Precipitation and upstream were both associated with water pollution in drinking water source area. Finally, a warning index system was proposed and the weight of each indicator was determined by AHP method. The results showed that the importance follows the following order:pollution condition> basic condition> ecological security environment risk> regulatory ability.
