The bending behavior of woven fabric has been studied by many researchers recently.It affects the handle of fabric during the processing as well as wearing. There are a lot of testmethods about the properties of fabric bending. In this paper, the theory of fabric bendingand test method is first introduced. The model of saddle shape bending of fabric is thendesigned by the author. Next, the test parameters are optimized based on the single factoranalysis method. The bending index is proposed for assessing the bending ability of fabric.Finally, the effects of fabric density and area density on the bending properties of fabric areinvestigated. It can be concluded as following:(1) The equipment of fabric bending in the saddle shape is manufactured, whichincludes the basic plane, collet, loading and accessories. The basic plane is consisted of flattable and hollow cylinder. The collet is composed of fixed plate, active plate, hand shankand screw. The plane loading is employed in the test method. The accessory includes pin,bolt, hand shank, nut, spring, etc.(2) Two kinds of paper, film and fabric with different thicknesses are employed as thespecimen to optimize the test conditions. The single factor method is used to study thebending behavior of fabric. The results show that the saddle bending method is accord withthat of the rectangular cantilever method. The optimum condition is given in the following:end distance16mm, specimen width50mm and loading rate50mm/min.(3) A group of PET/Cotton fabrics with different fabric densities are fabricated on amanual sampling loom with32tex yarn. The effects of test parameters such as end distance,specimen width and loading rate on the bending index of fabric are measured. Theregression equations are then fitted using the statistical method.
