Universal machine tools are frequently-used and important machine tools inmachinery manufacturing. The paper develops universal machine tools (mainlyincluding lathe series, milling machine series, planning machine, grinding machine,drilling machine series, boring machine, gear cutting machine) and cutting processingtechnology virtual reality system based on Quest3D, image processing technology and3D modeling software. Users can use the computer screen as a window to observeuniversal machine and process of cutting processing technology, achieve the machine’sinteractive features by a keyboard, mouse and other input devices, etc. The system candemonstrate basic operation of universal machine tools and its cut processingtechnology. It effectively solves the problem that the traditional teaching method ofmachine tool (chart, real model, scene teaching) is poorly visual, lowly efficient,hazardous and provides an alternating platform between technology designers andprocessing workers.In this paper, the work carried out in the following aspects:①Applying3D modeling software such as UG、Pro/E、SolidWorks to establishgeometrical model of universal machine tools, and processing technology model(including the cutting tool, work piece and the cutting layer model). Then, they areimported into the Quest3D software after optimizing the model on3ds Max software.②Basing on the full development of Quest3D: To realize basic control movementof each type of general machine tools and complete virtual machining of several typicaltechnology; to design friendly graphical user interface (GUI);③Researching on key technologies of the system, including: building complexgeometric model of machine parts; to apply particle system to simulate chip and coolantso as to make virtual machining process more realistic; universal machine tools andcutting processing technology virtual reality system is an open, constantly improvingsystem. It can easily increase other types of universal machine, the typical process andrelated spare parts of process systems such. With the expansion of the system, it issimplifying the geometry and improving the technology process to optimize the system.④Through testing the eventually generated EXE files, the results show that it canrun on common computer operating system (Windows XP, Windows7, etc). Theuniversal machine tool3D graphics system shows are bright, good real-time. The system realizes the effective expression of basic movement of universal machine toolsand machining process and friendly human-computer interaction function.Through the above research, it proves feasible to realize universal machine toolsand cutting processing technology virtual reality system based on full development ofQuest3D and3D modeling software. It provides an active model for students andoperators to learn universal machine tools. And it is beneficial to communicate betweentechnology designers and processing workers.
