The superficial stress of the hard coatings and the interfacial stress between substrates andcoatings were studied in this paper. The single and multilayer hard coatings were studied under theactions of the spherical indenter and cylinder indenter respectively, and the contact model forfinite element analysis was established based on the finite element software ANSYS. Theinfluence of different parameters such as elastic modulus ratio, Poisson’s ratio, friction coefficientμ and the thickness ratio of coating on the distribution of the contact stress are discussed. Theresult of this work will provide theoretical guidance for the correct optimization design. In order to provide a basis for the simulation calculation, DLC, TiAlN, TiN and CrN filmswere chosen for the bonding force measurement experiment and friction and wear experiment. The film adhesion gets higher with the elastic modulus of coatings increasing. When the headcontact with the coating surface, the quantity size order of steady friction on each coating is CrN>DLC> TiN> TiAlN, this result provides a strong basis for the calculation later. The bonding strength test model of single layer coating was designed and then the finiteelement analysis was calculated, at last the variation trends of shear stress and pressure stresswhich were on the coating surface and the surface that between substrate and coating wereconcluded. These trends were influenced by elastic modulus ratio, Poisson’s ratio, frictioncoefficient μ of different coatings; The credibility of simulation results was verified by comparingwith the experiment data. The bonding strength test model of multilayer layer coating was designed and then the finiteelement analysis was calculated, at last the variation trends of shear stress and pressure stresswhich were on the coating surface and the surface that between substrate and coating wereconcluded. These trends were influenced by elastic modulus ratio, Poisson’s ratio, frictioncoefficient μ of different coatings. There is a summary of the work at the end of this paper, and some problems that need to takea further research were put forward..
