In recent years, with the rapid development of social economy, discharge amount ofwastewater from related area of urban river increased quickly and river environment faced greatchallenges. Now, the quality of water environment has not been fundamentally improved, andblack smelly phenomenon from some urban river is so serious that public has strong reflectionon it. Therefore, it has become one of the important missions of urban development to analyzeand monitor water quality and study comprehensive renovation of urban river. In this study, firstly, the monitoring results of water quality were analyzed which werefrom16monitoring sections of12main rivers in four towns in Foshan, and the number ofmonitoring indicators was22. Secondly, pollution sources were investigated in five major urbanrivers. Then, the integrated regulation project of river was explored combined with pollutioncharacteristics and status of five major urban rivers. Finally, a instance of comprehensiveimprovement project in a section of Foshan was introduced. The main conclusions are asfollows:(1) The results indicated that the concentrations of some pollution indicators exceededwater quality standard Ⅴgrade of surface water according to analyzing the monitoring results ofwater quality from16monitoring sections of12main rivers in four towns in Foshan. Thepollutant concentrations did not display some variation because natural tides of nearby rivershad no influence on urban river. However, it was greatly affected by upstream sluice scouring.(2) The major pollutants of water quality from urban river in Foushan were dissolvedoxygen, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, totalphosphorus and anionic surfactant. In addition, Monitoring sections of eight creeks wereseverely contaminated. There were Rural Creek, Qicha primary, Nandou Sluice, North-southBay(North of the city Sluice), upstream of North-south Bay, north and south Creak, RonanCreek, Ditian Creek and so on.(3) Through the investigation and analysis of major pollution sources in five urban rivers, itwas concluded that pollution sources of Fengshou Creek and Foshan Creek were quite complex. They not only included straight sewage of its upstream and the region, rainwater and sewagedue to heavy rains, but also the continued pollution caused by pipeline leaks. Ultimately, theywere caused by defects of the rainwater and sewage system. Hence, implementation ofrainwater and sewage diversion was the most common, effective and sustainable way inwatercourse regulation by recent interception and forward reformation of the drainage system. (4) Watercourse regulation programs and related management modes were proposed aimingat the polluted status of urban river in Foshan. The first important step is the sewageinterception. In this process, pipelines should be constructed to collect wastewater. Thenwastewater was transported to the nearest sewage treatment plant and discharged after reachingto the standard. Secondly, water purification and sediment dredging were put into effect. Finally, ecological restoration of river and bunding was carried out. In order to maintain and improveoutcomes permanently after watercourse regulation, there must be follow-up monitoringmanagement of water quality.(5) Comprehensive renovation had been proceeded on part of the contaminated river inFoshan which included construction of the sewage pipe network and dredging the river. Nowwater quality has been improved significantly and ecological green landscape built on part ofriver bunding. However, the current river restoration project only reflected its functional andecological principles, while the hydrophilic and continual principles were not embodied. Therefore, it should be needed in the future to strengthen the management and upgrade andreform the construction of water environment in city.
