The Application Of Foshan Lantern Art In Modern Lighting Design

The Lantern Festival is a Chinese traditional festival which hang various colored lamps called lanterns to heighten the festive atmosphere. The tradition that hang lanterns on the Lantern Festival was merely popular in ancient Chinese imperial places, and the lanterns on the Latern Festival was also called palace lanterns before. The emperor gave an order to share this tradition with the public to celebrate nationally, which developed folk lanterns. The folk lanterns develop a wide variety of types and styles with indigenous materials, which makes lanterns full of mysterious romantic national breath and national characters. The Foshan lanterns endow with local national characters, whether all are rich in cultural heritage on the shape, structure, and colors. The traditional folk arts which is the Foshan lanterns, combine with the design of modern lighting fixtures, to make modern lighting fixtures both with traditional and fashion.Through market research to collect artistic pictures and written historical materials of lighting fixtures and the Foshan lanterns, and combined with literature research method, this article discussses the types and artistic characteristics of lamps and Foshan lanterns. The Foshan lanterns is usually of two kinds which are Qiuse lanterns and Zhongyuan lanterns, and produce by four steps which are design, framework, wrapper, and assembling, which endow with artistic characteristics by exquisite workmanship, bright color, unique materials, and various styles. This article also analyze modern lighting fixtures’ form styles, material technology, functional requirement, ornamental form, and market demand.Explore the art of Foshan lantern design in modern lighting fixtures of conformal nature, moderate, times, fusion, and analysis traditional Foshan Lantern material, shape, color, decoration, moral and other elements, then combined its material, shape, decoration, mood with modern lighting design, to explore the application of the principles and method of modern lighting fixtures design in the Foshan lantern.Finally, through a series of lighting design practice, this article try to verificate the feasibility and rationality that blend the Foshan lanterns’ art into modern lighting design.
