The chemical modification of wood has been intensively studied with the aim of improving or modifying its compatility with other substances, dimensional stability and resistance to decay, etc. It mainly includes esterification (which has been alreadly producted industrialization) and etherification (which is less studied). With the continuous expansion of the applications of chemical modification of wood, giving it beautiful color was an attractive work. It can improve the visual characteristics of wood and increase the added value of wood, and is an important direction of wood processing and the utilization of fast-growing wood. In this paper, modified fir powders were prepared through three kinds of ether modification (benzylation, cyanoethylation and ethylation) of Chinese fir powders. The samples were characterized by the Infrared spectra (IR), scanning electron microphotographs (SEM) and Microscopic imaging system (TEM) and dyeing mechanism was proposed. Conclusions were summarized as follows:1.. The benzylated, cyanoethylated and ethylated modification of Chinese fir powderIn NaOH solution, Chinese fir powders respectively occurred with benzyl chloride, acrylonitrile and diethyl sulfate respectively to prepare corresponding modified fir powders. Under the optimum conditions, the weight gain rates were57.8%,32.5%and12.6%respectively.2, Dyeing properties of the three kinds of etherified fir powdersThe benzylated, cyanoethylated and ethylated Chinese fir powders were dyed with a series of disperse dyes under high temperature and high pressure. The dyeing results indicated that the pH value of dyed three kinds of etherified fir powders was consistent with dyed polyester fabric. The color shade of dyed modified fir powders was similar to that of dyed polyester fabric and brighter to dyed unmodified fir powders; the percentage of dye exhaustion (%E) was also significantly higher than that of unmodified fir powders. When the solution pH in the range of4-5, the percentage of dye of modified fir powders reached90%, washing fade rate was below15%and washing fastness was3-5grade, to reflect bright color and dyeing high percentage. The order of the percentage of dye exhaustion of three kinds of etherified fir powders:benzylated fir powders> cyanoethylated fir powders> ethylated fir powders, and the color shade of benzylated fir powders was the most brilliant.3、Structure Characterization and Analysis of the samplesThe samples were characterized by the Infrared spectra (IR), scanning electron microphotographs (SEM) and Microscopic imaging system (TEM). IR spectrum of three kinds of etherified fir powders exhibited that IR spectrum of benzylated fir powders exhibited the appearance of strong absorption band at1593cm-1,1497cm-1and1454cm-1assigned to the benzene. IR spectrum of cyanoethylated fir powders exhibited the appearance of strong absorption band at2251cm-1assigned to the-CN group. IR spectrum of ethylated fir powders exhibited the appearance of strong absorption band at2899and2975cm-1assigned to the methylene and methyl group. The SEM analysis indicated that the morphology of modified fir powders was dramatically changed, the smaller transition pore, and fiber wall thinning and softening around micropores. Higher the degree of modified fir powders softening than the unmodified fir powders; it is advantageous to reflect sunlight. Especially dyed benzylated fir powders were the smoothest. The microscopic images revealed dyed unmodified and modified fir powders have the mesh structural characteristics and the unevenly distribution of dyes.4、Dyeing mechanisms of etherified fir powders with disperse dyesAccording to the above results, the mechanisms of disperse dyes dyed on etherified fir powders contained the following four processes:dissolution and diffusion with disperse dyes; adsorption of etherified fir powders on the disperse dyes; dyes adsorption equilibrium between etherified fir powder and ether solution; fixation of disperse dyes on etherified fir powders. In this paper, modified fir powders were prepared through three kinds of ether modification of Chinese fir powders, studiing its dyeing properties and accessed to the bright color of a new decoration material. It can improve the original surface physical and chemical properties of wood to get solid color, decorative effect and utilization quality of wood. So, it will be favored by consumers, furnitures and decoration industries. In this paper, it is expected to open a new way for recycling forest resources and waste wood, meeting the requirements of the current economic, social sustainable development and global climate cooperation and it is of great significance for China to pursue the development of a low carbon economy path. This study not only enriches the processing method of wood, enlarging the application areas and the value of the wood, but also expands the application of modified wood with disperse dyes.
