Butyl rubber(IIR) is widely used in inner tube, medical bottle cork, electrical insulating material, sealing material and so on. But butyl rubber is monopolized by several transnational firm beceuse of it s particularity in polymerization process. In this paper, a novel Rotating Packed Bed(RPB) technology has been used to prepare the butyl rubber for the first time using it s short residence time, high mass transfer intensity, excellent micromixing and so on. The results revealed that IIR prepared by the unique high gravity reactive technology with the molecular weight of2.89×105and molecular weight distribution index of about2was obtained in the experimental condition. In addition, the mean residence time of the products is less than1s while that of the conventional technology is30-60min. The production efficiency per unit volume of the equipment was increased by2-3orders of magnitude. The effects of the operating parameters, such as rotate speed(N), packing layer(L), polymerization temperature(Tp), monomer flow rate(U1), catalyzer concentraton(Ccat) on the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of IIR were investigated in the experiment. The optimal polymerization condition is:N=1200r·min-1, L=60, Tp=-100℃, U1=2.36m·s-1.In this paper, a numerical model describing the polymerization in RPB has also been established. The model was verified by the experiment data and good agreement was achieved. The comparison illustrated that the model can reflect the actual process by analyzing the simulation results with good accuracy.
