Economy is progressing, environmental problems have been revealed andenvironmental pressure tends to increase. At present, the environmental problemshave show these characters as following in China, the various source of environmentalpressure, environmental pressure distribution in regions, the increasing trending ofenvironmental pressure. Many researchers try to develop this problem from differentangles, most of them devote to environmental pressure from carbon emission, some ofthem turn to enrich the content of this problem in order to analyze environmentalpressure much better and more serious, the effective and efficient policy could bemade to help government solve the environmental problems and decrease theenvironmental pressure.Taking30provinces as research objects and the period from1997to2010asresearch range, based on six pollutants, a comprehensive environmental pressureindex is established with―vertical and horizontal‖grading approach. Then theenvironmental pressure situation in provinces is analyzed from aspects respectively asfollowing, average environmental pressure degree, the changing trend ofenvironmental pressure and the changing degree of environmental pressure. The basicenvironmental situation has been analyzed comprehensively in each region during1997–2010, based on STIRPAT model, the relationship between environmentalpressure and driving factors has been revealed from the average environmentalpressure and the changing trend of environmental in the different regions respectly.The results have shown: by analyzing elasticity of driving factors, the populationfactor and the economy factor increases the environmental pressure, the technologyfactor decrease the environmental pressure, the comprehensive driving effects fromthese three factors are different in each regions, the30provinces could be divided intothree divisions according to average environmental pressure level. Combinedelasticity of driving factors with change of environmental pressure, the environmentalpressure shows four trends. Besides, judged on the variation coefficients, some typicalprovinces have been picked up because of stronger environmental pressure fluctuation,it is much larger in Inner Mongolia, Sichuan and Liaoning province with0.09,0.06and0.05, it reveals that environment situation in Inner Mongolia is very severe and needs improving, while the implementation effect of environmental protection policyis much better in Sichuan and Liaoning where environmental pressure is decreasedsignificantly.
