Formaldehyde is a flammable, colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. It issoluble in water, alcohol and ether. Formaldehyde is gaseous state at normaltemperature, usually in the form of an aqueous solution. Formaldehyde can be used asdisinfectants and preservatives. It is also an important organic material can be used forsynthetic resins, plastics, rubber, papermaking and production of a fuel, pesticide, film,explosives. Even in the timber industry and the textile industry it can be used in manyways.Although formaldehyde has so many uses, it is harmful to human health. Ifhuman surroundings by excessive formaldehyde concentration, the light may causeheadache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, chest tightness, and autonomicdisorders. Long-term exposure can cause cancer. Long-term exposure for pregnantwomen may cause fetal malformations or even death. Therefore, residents need toalways pay attention to their own concentration of formaldehyde. If the formaldehydeconcentration is too high, we should promptly take appropriate measures to avoidhazards caused by formaldehyde.There are many ways to test the formaldehyde concentration. Conventionalchemical detection methods have high detection accuracy, but the detection step iscomplex and needs specialized personnel to operate. The time of the detection is verylong. So the conventional chemical detection methods are better for using in thelaboratory. Most of the new electronic formaldehyde concentration detector isconvenient to use. But they usually very big and the results need to be read by peoplethemselves. They do not have intelligent detection function and cannot alarm whenthe concentration of formaldehyde is exceeded.This paper discusses are: design a smart formaldehyde detector based onelectronic formaldehyde sensors. This detector can automatically detect and record theconcentration of formaldehyde in the environment. Then transfer data to mobiledevices with Wireless module. And the data will be displayed on mobile devices.When the concentration of formaldehyde is exceeded, the detector can alarm people totake timely measures.This paper discusses the main contents include the detector’s hardware systemdesign and the development of the software system. The overall design analyzes theselection of the operating system for mobile devices and the wireless transmissionmethods. Hardware system design including component selection analysis, schematicdesign and PCB design. Software system development includes the development ofapplications for mobile devices and microcontroller control program. Finally, the paper describes the test methods and gives the results of the test of the detector’shardware and software system.
