Featured with excellent display and thin features, LCD glass substrates have important significance and practical application value in modern project area. With the thin and brittle characteristics of LCD glass materials, traditional mechanical cutting methods were not a ideal method. It can easily case big residual stress, chips, micro-cracks and other defects. All of this resulting low yield and low processing efficiency.In recent years, controlled crack cutting is a potential laser cutting method with high cutting efficiency and high-quality profile. In order to achieve laser cutting LCD glass substrates with controlled crack, a new method was reported in this paper. An initial crack was prepared on the surface of LCD substrates using Nd:YAG laser and CO2laser was used as heat source to induce crack propagation.Firstly, this paper introduced related status and trend of laser cutting glass and other brittle materials in the world. At the same time, research method, purpose and technical routes were also introduced. The mechanism of interaction between laser and material and the absorption method of glass materials were analyzed. Fracture and crack propagation mechanism also were studied for the thermal cracking cutting method.Secondly, finite element analysis software ANSYS was used to simulate temperature and stress field. According to the temperature and stress fields, the model of laser cutting LCD glass substrates with controlled crack was established. Meanwhile experimental system was set up and the experiments of laser cutting LCD glass substrates were carried out. The impacts of laser power, laser scanning velocity, beam mode, laser spot size, material properties and thickness of LCD glass substrates on cutting quality were analyzed, respectively. The optimum parameters of CO2laser cutting LCD glass substrates were obtained.Finally, the experimental results are compared with the simulation results. The results of experiment and simulation are similar. Theoretical calculation can be verified by experiment and forecast the experiment results. This work effectively improved the quality and efficiency of laser cutting LCD glass substrates, and promoted domestic laser cutting industry.
