As the rapid development of the chemical industry and the constant expansion of the factory construction, shortening the design cycle and construction cycle has become the core of market competition. The traditional design model has been difficult to meet the demands of design industry on project quality control, progress supervision and information exchange. Therefore,3D model design software emerges as the times require.In the detailed engineering design stage, piping design accounts for about30%-40%of the total workload. At present, in order to improve design quality and efficiency, many famous chemical engineering design companies at home and abroad have been widely applying the plant design software, such as PDS, PDMS, SP3D, etc.3D model design software possesses multi-specialty design modules and the powerful database, which can be used to intuitively find out the mistake, omission, clash and incompletion of design to guarantee the design quality. In addition,3D model design can also show the actual-effect pictures of finished factory and unit devices visually and dynamically. Those are good for clients to make more objective and accurate decisions to make construction control and productive maintenance.This paper has made a comprehensive analysis of3D model design software on the matters which we may meet in the design project and design management. Besides, it also elaborates the specific application methods of PDS, PDMS and SP3D in the chemical piping design combining with engineering practice. The secondary development of PDS is carried out based on the application of PDS in3D chemical piping system design. And this secondary development includes the aspects of isometric drawing output, supports materials statistics, piping materials take off and piping insulation materials summary list. Due to the secondary development, the isobutane dehydrogenation project in Yulang has been saved much design time and it thereby improved work efficiency compared with other projects. The results show that the secondary development of PDS can realize the integration of the3D design work so that it will improve the quality of chemical piping design, accelerate the project progress and enhance the production efficiency of chemical plant.
