The buried pipelines will appear corrosion defects on the outer surface inevitably due to thesoil erosion after the long service time, these corrosion defects may result in pipeline perforationor leakage or crack eventually. So, in order to avoid unnecessary loss, it is necessary to carry outresidual strength assessment and residual life prediction for corroded pipelines and deal withaccident potential earlier. In this thesis, the current major residual strength evaluation standards and methods forcorroded pipelines, such as ASME B31G, Modified B31G, ASME B31G-2009, RSTRENG,DNV-RP-F101(2010), PCORRC and SY/T6151-2009, were overviewed in details of theirapplication scope, assumed condition and assessment process. Based on burst experiment datafrom published literature, the conservative nature of several methods was evaluated bycomparing the burst pressure from burst tests with the corresponding burst pressure predicted bythe assessment methods. The results can help the reviewers to choose appropriate evaluationmethod in accordance with the site condition and information. In addition, three types ofcorrosion rate prediction models and residual life prediction methods were studied. On the basisof the studies mentioned above, the software about residual strength assessment and residual lifeprediction for corroded pipelines was developed with Excel VBA. The software with friendlyinterface is convenient to be used and it can reduce the computational intensity and improvework efficiency effectively. It is a practical tool not only for professionals, but also for thepipeline operation and maintenance personnel who may lack of the specific knowledge aboutresidual strength assessment and residual life prediction for corroded pipelines.
