Urban public transport is not only city's blood but also the vitals of city. It is the clear movement of people, vehicles and goods that makes all activities in city prosperous. Improving urban public transport is both a way to increase efficiency and promote the flow of people and a strategic step to better the living condition of people and realize sustainable development. Since the implement of the reform and opening-up policy and with the fast development of Chinese economy and society, there has been an intensified contradiction between the increasing demand of traffic and the limited space for road pavement. Many big cities in China are confronted with increasingly severe conditions for transport. Traffic congestions and environmental pollution have been main factors restricting the social and economic development of China and the improvement of people's living standards. As the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province, Kunming is also perplexed with such problems as deteriorating environmental pollution, increasing consumption of resources and traffic congestions caused by the development of economy and society. Recent years has witnessed a rise in the number of motor cars in Kunming, especially in 2009 when traffic conditions were bettered after the completion of the second ring express ways, and the number reached 1,250,000 in August,2009. More families possess cars, which has led to the change in people's lifestyle while posed a threat to the city traffic of Kunming. How to efficiently utilize different transportations to contribute to harmonious transport development has been a critical issue in developing transport system of Kunming. Therefore, it is urgent to change the present transport structure and explores modern development modes based upon the two principles of "Public Transportations First" and "Excellent Public transportations". This thesis, by studying the mutual relationship between the development of public transport and urbanization, examines the present situation of public transport of Kunming and foresees the development modes suitable for the future development of Kunming.
