The Impact Of Expo On Shanghai's Economy

On 3 December,2002 Shanghai won the bid to host the world exposition 2010 in the 132nd congress of BIE. Shanghai World Expo was officially opened on May the first in Shanghai of our country. This World Expo will end on the last day of October lasting six months,184 days. The World Expo altogether with the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup is called the three top events in the world. This Shanghai Expo is the second grand gathering which is held in our country after Beijing Olympic Games and it will have a great impact on many areas and many aspects of Shanghai'economy. The fields Shanghai World Expo refers to are wide and important and the influence it brings is profound and far-reaching.It's the first time that registered expo was held in our country and it can show the world our comprehensive national strength strengthening communicating with other countries. At the same time Shanghai World Expo can also promote our country's image and has important political significance. It is enough for Shanghai World Expo to influence Shanghai's economy and development for several years even more than ten years. Therefore, the study of Shanghai World Expo economy has very important practical significance. But in the academic research fields of our country expo economics started later and the academic achievements which can be experienced are less. So Shanghai World Expo can provide our economic research of events a powerful data, which will play a key role in this area even the whole economic fields.Based the combining of theoretical and empirical analysis this article gives a brief analysis on the Shanghai World Expo economic effects. The whole article has seven parts:the first part is introduction; the second part is mainly experiencing research of the world expo. From the third part to the sixth part are the economic impacts of Expo on fixed asset investment, employment, consumption and tourism industry. Finally the seventh part is the main conclusions and looking. Overall, the first part of this paper starts from the introduction of the research background including the historical origin between China and the world expo, some introduction and meanings of Shanghai World Expo and its research meanings. Then based on the research literature review and summaries, classification the paper grasps the pulse of the world expo in macroscopic view in economic research development and puts forward the framework. Considering Beijing Olympic Games, Germany Hannover Expo and Japanese Expo as the referring objects the second part of experiencing research mainly studies on the affection of great events like the world expo in different countries and regions then summarizes the rules of world expo economic development. Through combining theory and empirical analysis and using time series analysis method and the sampling survey the third to sixth parts focus on the analysis of Shanghai Expo economic effects including during preparation investment of capital asserts and employment, during opening time estimation of consumption power and in the entire process impacts on tourism industry of Shanghai. It analyzes both from the view of the time and from the industry. The final part is conclusions and looking. The main conclusions of this paper are following. During preparation direct and indirect investment of capital asserts Shanghai World Expo brings are about 3.09% of sum of investment of capital asserts. The World Expo increases about 4 million employments. Through survey on the volunteers from other regions, the paper estimates that the World Expo produces about 4 billion consumption. As for the tourist industry, the effects can be found after the applying to the world expo and during the opening time it is more invisible.Although the subject is new, it is undeniable that due to the research material and oneself ability, based on the analysis of economic impact of Shanghai World Expo has many insufficiencies. For example because of relevant date which is used the indicators adopted by the paper can research from the macroscopic level, which may influence on the accuracy of conclusion. Another example is research methods, the existing problems by themselves may bring some errors to research conclusion. At the same time Shanghai World Expo effects on Shanghai's economic in many aspects, which is profound, but the paper just chooses some of them. For the whole Shanghai economics more profound and long-term effects may be the future direction of the research scholars.
