| T.E.Mao. (1896-1989) is a well-known bridge expert, the civil engineer and the project educationalist. His remarkable engineering innovative thought of project made great contributions to the bridge construction and engineering construction in China. This thesis aims to analyze and adumbrate the four facets of engineering innovation:the motivity, thinking, means and basis of engineering innovation, which are concluded from T.E.Mao.'s engineering innovative idea.Engineering innovation needs motivity. Patriotism inspired the spirit of innovation of T.E.Mao. The engineering knowledge and engineering practice laid the foundation of engineering innovation and developed the ability of engineering innovation.Engineering innovative thinking is the core of engineering innovation. T.E.Mao. was good at dialectical thinking to solve engineering problems and using the natural forces to overcome natural obstacles. As engineering activities have the attribution of system and inheritance, T.E.Mao, emphasized on the use of comprehensive thinking and manage the relationship between parts and the whole engineering activity, between the engineering activity itself and the various external factors, and between the past and present. He also stressed the combination of logical thinking and artistic thinking. Artistic thinking is beneficial to develop the creativity of engineers and to pursue the beauty of engineering, which can be expressed on the real engineering project through the logical thinking to create a project with both of beauty and good quality.The metasynthesis thinking of T.E.Mao, was mainly reflected on the construction process of Qiantang River Bridge. He stressed that the engineering should be treated on the basis of all engineering factors. Under the guidance of engineering idea, T.E.Mao. proceeded serials of integrated innovations on engineering factors such as technology, construction methods, quality management and engineering culture. With regard to the problems might arising because of the integration of engineering factors, T.E.Mao. put forward to three suggestions. He thought that the materials and structures, the new technologies and existing equipment as well as the new technology and national resources should match with each other.Engineering talents is the key to the engineering innovation. In his point of view, there were five qualities that innovative engineering talents should have. He also insisted that modern engineering education must be reformed and proposed some specific methods. First of all, the construction of engineering knowledge should be cross-disciplinary integrated. Secondly, it is crucial to carry out engineering education, which emphasis on the importance of engineering practice and combining theory with practice. He also advocated the teaching of engineering education should use heuristics to increase students'enthusiasm and interest and to develop imagination and creativity of students. |
