Research On Enhancement Of Urban Functions: From The Perspective Of Industrial Innovation

Nowadays, it is the consensus that innovation is the very source of the economic growth. Innovation has become the most important factor for countries or cities who want to promote their regional economic growth. But only a few regions, such as the Silicon Valley, successfully control the magic of innovation so well that bring the rapid local economic growth. Innovation is really not an easy thing. "Sticky Places in Slippery Space" shows that the innovation activities are more and more globalized while they emerge and develop in certain districts with specific conditions. On the other hand, with the agglomeration of the emerging industries in several hi-tech regions, urban development shows closer and closer relation with technology innovation. Industrial innovation directly impacts the urban spatial structure and urban functions, which economists, geographers and sociologist have studied from various angles due to their own knowledge.Enterprises are the subjects in the process of urban function enhancement whose is mainly rely on the industrial structure optimization. Industrial innovation, the agglomeration of enterprise innovation activities, such as R&D (research and development), is essential for companies to survive in the global competition. Meanwhile, it is also the power to further accelerate the development of urban industry, optimize the industrial structure and upgrade the urban functions.Paper analyzes the better way to promote or update the urban functions from the angle of the industrial innovation. At first, the author studies the relationship between the industrial innovation and urban function. Then he interprets the current status of Shanghai industrial innovation. At last, the author proposes the path of Shanghai in developing industrial innovation hub and takes Shanghai automobile industry as an example. The paper explains and shows how the industrial innovation plays an essential role in the transformation and enhancement of urban functions in cities like Shanghai.
