Macro-organization theory often attributes an organization's effectiveness to its capacity to absorb environmental variation or buffer its technical core from external environmental influences.This ability to adapt to dramatic shifts or discontinuities in the environment is frequently linked to the absorption mechanism termed organizational slack. Organizational slack can be actual or potential, and research has generally supported the value of both in adapting to environmental changes. Slack is necessary for organizations to have room to adapt, change and protect critical processes from environmental turbulence.There are lots of researches about the issue of organizational slack in foreign country and get some fruits.But in domestic, the research on organizational slack is very few.Because organizational slack plays an important role in organizational theory and it is very useful in practice, this paper studys the economic result of organizational slack in two aspects of performance and innovation,and shows their relationship by empirical study method.This paper takes Shanghai and shenzhen listed companies in manufacturing industry which throws daylight on research and development expense in 2007 and 2008 as the research object, excluding the listed companies of the special treatment (st,*st),and makes empirical analysis about the relationship between organizational slack and performance or innovation by using Spss15.0 statistic software。The empirical results of this paper shows that: the relationship between organizational slack and performance is inverse U-shaped, and the relationship between organizational slack and innovation is inverse U-shaped too。That the degree of organizational slack is too big or too small is negative for performance and innovation,a modest degree of organizational slack is advantageous for performance and innovation。...
