Since the reform and opening up, while developed rapidly, China's urbanization also faced dual pressures, which are expanding scale and improving quality. Urbanization has become an important national development strategy in "Twelfth Five" period. Remote sensing technology has been maturing gradually, the characteristic of multi-period and large-scale in acquiring spatial data for urban land-use has become an important means of space-time evolution. Remote sensing has become an important means of spatio-temporal characteristics of urban land-use .In this paper, some data or software were used to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics of Ningbo, as follows. The landsat MSS and TM/ ETM based on 14 satellite images data in six periods of 1979 , 1990 ,1995 ,2000, 2005 and 2010; taking use of decision tree for classificating; interactive interpretation; the data of Ningbo urban land use of six period and study of urban land expansion and the relationship between social and economic development. The above analysis brings about the following conclusions.(1)The rising tendency of Ningbo urban land area marked acceleration.Annual growth values respectively are: 1979-1990: 1.61km~2, 1990-1995: 12.35km~2, 1995-2000: 17.67 km~2, 1995-2000: 36.99 km~2, 2005-2010: 29.13 km~2.(2) There are significant differences of expansion speed and strength of land in urban land-use between districts and other county-level cities of Ningbo. The expansion speed change of urban land in the urban areas is divided into four stages: beginning to accelerate, high speed, fluctuations, steady. However, four stages in other county-level cities are beginning to accelerate, high speed, steady and difference. From 1979 to 2010, the exponential growth of expansion strength as a whole, but showed significant volatility, Ningbo "M" type; Yuyao and Cixi inverted "V" shape; Fenghua, Xiangshan and Ninghai are "N" types.(3)Spatial structure of urban land-use in Ningbo has obvious fractal features, fractal dimension and the stability index with significant volatility. In the years of 1979-2010, fractal dimension and stability index also seem like "N". Since 1995 fractal dimension has augmented gradually, (the topmost data was 1.4613), which makes spatial complexity increment; while stability index has been dropped off, which causes spatial structure tend to be instable. (4) The expansion of urban land-use between districts and every county-level city of Ningbo shows different characteristics. In 1917, the districts and Yuyao of Ningbo has been closed to saturation in an area of 1km within the City Center, and other county-level cities not. The expansion of every city show its characteristic of inside-out and near-far, at the same time, due to urban greening, reduction of core area of urban land-use: urban, "the three old districts" (Haishu, Jiangdong, Jiangbei districts) and the Beilun, Zhenhai districts had an opposite development in urban land-use; and so Yuyao and Cixi, Fenghua and the districts; and Xiangshan had a southeast expansion; Ninghai to the north.(5) There is a close relativity between urban land expansion and socio-economic development. It showed a positive linear correlation between area and GDP, non-agricultural population, total fixed asset investment, but the expansion of urban land-use shows an obvious hysteresis.
