The Silk Road is a long exchanging path of trade and culture with two thousand years history. The west part is the land Silk Road, formatting in the Western Han Dynasty Emperor period. It starts from Chang'an in the east, wearing Hexi Corridor to Dunhuang, covering Pamir, arriving the Eastern Mediterranean. In the book "China" written in the 1870s by German geographer Von Lichthofen, this ancient road is called the "The Silk Road." The Silk Road (mainly referring to the Northwest Silk Road domestic in this paper), as a hot tourist destination for Chinese tourism, has attracted domestic and foreign tourists and has played a vital role for the rapid development of China's tourism industry.The tourism resources on Silk Road are rare and tourism has become a key feature of the five northwestern provinces' economy in Silk Road. After 20 years' development, tourism is becoming the pillar industries in the national economy in the provinces. In advocacy for sustainable development today, how to ensure that the Silk Road tourism towards sustainable development? How to judge whether its development is sustainable? How to maintain its sustainability? These issues are placed in front of the academic and management, needing to address urgently and very realistic. Responding to these problems, the paper exposits on some major issues such as the sustainability of the Silk Road tourism through analyzing theoretical ideas and specific studies.The text is divided into five chapters.Chapter one exposits the background, rationale and study design of the research. The choice of this topic is a combining result of personal experiences and tourism research study trend. Based on the tourism geography research methodology and theoretical basis of sustainable development, using deep, thorough research designed this house research ideas.Starting from the concept of tourist destination, Chapter two mainly focuses on the theoretical research of sustainable development of tourist destinations, tourist destinations sustainable indices and destination management.Chapter three and four is tourism sustainability assessment and management of the Silk Road. It gives out a competitive analysis of the Silk Road, figures out tourist destination sustainability indices of the Silk Road, and conducts evaluation of the Silk Road tourism sustainable development approach.Chapter five summarizes the study and gives out recommendations for further research.
