Objective It is to understand the situation of complementary food sold and bought in Chinese rural and effects on purchasing behavior of infants' custody that a survey had been carried out in five counties in Chinese rural. The results of the investigation will be helpful to supply references for improving nutritional level of Chinese infants and young children, and generalizing complementary food for improving Chinese rural malnourished infants and young children.Method Stratified muti-stage cluster sampling method was used for sample selection. Five hundred and eleven major custodies of infants and young children in rural from five provinces were selected for this study. The information on situation of basis of infants and young children, consumption (including money and quantity) of complementary food (including milk powder, drink, snaking) was collected using questionnaire survey. The information on perception and attitude towards complementary food and pouch of nutrient supplement of infants and young children of major custodies were collected using focus group discussing. The information on consumption of complementary food in gereral store, shop, and supermaket was collected by questionnaire survey.Results The results of consumption of complementary food in gereral store, shop, and supermarket are the following: (1) milk powder is the main of consumption in five counties as the complementary food, it is defferent in consumption of drink and snack in five counties, respectively; cereal is consumed mainly as complementary food in Fangshan County and Dongyang County, instant noodles are almost not as complementary food in Fangshan County in Beijing and Dongyang County in Zhejiang Province; dilatant food and instant noodles are consumed mainly as complementary food in Hui County and Bin County; cereal and instant noodles are consumed mainly in Dingxi County. (2) Price of complementary food is in downtrend as the sequence: Fangshan County in Beijing, Dongyang County in Zhejiang Province, Hui County in Henan Province, Bin County in Shanxi Province, Dingxi County in Gansu Province.
