After China entry into WTO, foreign banks speed up their pace to enter China's financial market to compete and carry through an all-round cooperation with China banks. Commercial banks in China now have many difficulties to compete with foreign banks only depending on traditional deposit and loan business, so they have to develop new profit sources. In another side, with the development of China's capital market and the trend of market-directed interest rate influenced by the international financial market, it made our profits of asset and liability business declined. Faced to the domestic trouble and foreign invasion, our commercial banks actively seek new profit growth pole and develop intermediary business greatly to become their important measure. In the background of the economic circumstance, the paper gathered mass data from various literatures as its investigation materials. Comparing with foreign intermediary business, it attempts to exposit the development pattern and profit way of the intermediary business in our country. Moreover it deeply investigates the innovation mode and assortments to promote the development of intermediary business in China, and extends its profit direction.Firstly, this paper introduces the concept, characteristics, classification and background theories of intermediary business, based on which the background theories of intermediary business development are introduced. These theories have practical significance for intermediary business development of commercial banks in china.Secondly, this paper briefly introduces the development background of western commercial banks and analyzes the development course of their intermediary business both interiorly and exteriorly, and concludes the international references for the development of intermediary business of commercial banks through analysis of current development of intermediary business of western commercial banks.Thirdly, through deep going analysis of the data of Chinese financial annuals for recent five years and the profit and loss statements for Chinese 13 commercial banks, this paper discloses the difference in development variety, operation charge, revenue proportion and management of intermediary business between Chinese and western commercial banks. In addition, it also analyzes the interior and exterior factors restricting the development of the intermediary business of our commercial banks.
