A Study Of Port Economy For China Merchants Zhangzhou Development Zone

The port economy of China is growing as the reform and opening-up policy goes deepened. It is not a chance occurrence that the abrupt rise of China in the past 20 years starts from the coastal areas which benefit from the development of port economy.Located in Xiamen Bay in southeast of China, China Merchants Zhangzhou Development Zone (CMZD) was established in the time as the reform and opening-up was deepened. Relied on its geographical advantage and port resource advantage, CMZD has achieved a certain development of port economy. With the globalization of world economy and the integration development of regional economy, it is what CMZD should examine and consider seriously on how to locate itself and seek the tactics for leapfrogging development.This thesis consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, it expounds necessity of this study by analyzing international and domestic economic development and briefly explains the current situation, significance, method and framework of this study. In the second chapter, starting from discussion of the concept of port economy, it probes into the industrial structure and key development elements of port economy. In the third chapter, it first reviews the three development stages of port economy of CMZD, then evaluates external and internal development factors of CMZD by means of SWOT analysis, so as to gain objective and comprehensive knowledge of development environment. In the forth chapter, by comparing with and analyzing the development of port economy in the development zones which also enjoy port resource advantage in China, it tries to seek experience and enlightenment for development of port economy of CMZD. In the fifth chapter, it first makes clear the development aim and strategy of port economy of CMZD, then puts forward tactics in view of development factors and industrial structure of port economy. In the sixth chapter, it briefly summarizes the main conclusions and explains limitations and questions needed further discussion of this study.In terms of theory, by synthesizing the experiences and summaries of practitioners, this study puts forward the industrial structure and development elements of port economy. In terms of case study, by means of a comparative study and SWOT analysis, this study puts forward the development strategy and tactics of port economy of CMZD based on different point of view.This study shows that under the integration development of regional economy, CMZD should seize the opportunities and keep on making its advantages yield well with the purpose of realizing its advantages into competitive strength and remedying its disadvantages. In order to develop into a new port industrial city proper located in Xiamen Bay, CMZD should implement the external strategy of the integration of regional economy and the internal strategy of mutual interaction between port and region.
