Recently, the inland feeder service in the Yangtze River has grown rapidly and the throughputs of the ports along the Yangtze River have had a great upsurge. It is forecasted that the total import and export volume of the inland feeder service in the Yangtze River will reach 1.2 million TEUs in 2005 and 1.65 million TEUs in 2006, and in 2007, it will surpass 2 million to arrive at 2.2 million TEUs.A Company is the company that provides the earliest inland feeder service in the Yangtze River, while at present, over 32 shipping companies have engaged in the service in Shanghai. To sustain its leading position, A Company faces great development and competition tension.By adoping the SWOT Analysis, the dissertation analyzes A Company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. From the analysis, it is apparent that, facing so many competitive rivals and the threats after China enters the WTO, the ship scale and makeup pose the biggest bottleneck of its development. To develop and strengthen its position and advantages in the service, A Company must increase its ship scale and improve the mixup.The plan to newly build bargers for A Company is given forward according to the selection of ship scale, the option of the direct Changjiang-to-sea transport and transshipment ports as well as the forecast for the shipping routes and the layout in 2007. it is suggested that eight 200-TEU ships launched on the Chongqing-Shanghai route,four 260-TEU ships on the Wuhan-Shanghai route, five 260-TEU ships on the Nanjing-Shanghai route, and three 260-TEU ships on the Zhangjiagang-Shanghai route.The additional four 400-TEU ships will provide the Changjiang-sea direct service between the Waigaoqiao Terminal and the Big&Small Yangshan Terminal.Through the economic calculation of cash flow, IRR and investment return...
