With the increasing international trade volume, the size of containership is becoming larger and larger. Then hub-and-spoke network has been adopted to container shipping among two or more regions. Many large shipping companies operate global service and transfer the feeder service to subsidiary companies supplying specialized feeder service. But there are some large shipping companies that don't have such subsidiary companies and then this gives opportunities for some smaller shipping companies to provide feeder service in the regions where global routes call. Therefore, optimization of scientific and reasonable feeder service, which will reduce operation cost of feeder transportation, improve profit and increase market share, has become a problem of great concern to shipping companies and an important topic of container liner shipping network theory. This paper has studied the construction of feeder network in Southeast Asia to complement the feeder container feeder network theory. Firstly, based on the summary and induction of research on domestic and foreign theory, this paper has introduced the basic theory of container liner shipping network and proposed the meaning of construction of feeder container liner shipping network. Then this paper has analyzed the demand of Southeast Asian feeder container liner shipping market and got the container volumes transported by feeders in Southeast Asia. Thirdly, this paper has applied the cluster analysis to hub selection and then we can get the hub of the feeder network. Fourthly, this paper has established a model for construction of Southeast Asian feeder container liner shipping network. Finally, this paper uses genetic algorithm for the model solution and work out the optimal network of Southeast Asian feeder container liner shipping.
