Ever since 1970s, great emphasis has been attached on the Environmental Protection. Moreover, the notion of Sustainable Development has spread throughout the world. Impact of Environmental Regulation on the International Industrial Competitiveness, which gradually became an important issue for the policy makers, is a controversial topic in the academia during recent years. Till now, no coincident conclusion has been reached for this topic. Theoretical studies tend to argue that strict environmental regulation would decrease international trade and weaken the competitiveness. However, empirical studies fail to approve this assumption, while some of them even come up with contrary result. For developing countries, this is an important issue that calls for special attention. If environmental regulation has negligible impact on international trade, or can accelerate economic development in the long term, developing countries should positively grasp the opportunity and challenge by working out comprehensive sets of environmental regulations which can facilitate environmental protection, as well as economic development.
