The Historical Changes And Custom Inheritance Of Shengfuqian Jie

Custom is a window to display the outlook of one society, and the street is the carrier that makes the custom of a city come down generation by generation. Through street custom of a community, we can get intuitionistic impression and perception on the social situation, and accordingly know the nature and characteristic of the society. Taking custom as the research focus, we can explore the trend of social development and find out the real life situation of the grass roots. Research on the custom in history therefore will be more convenient for us to seek the social development situation in different historical periods.This thesis intends to describe the basic situation of custom in Shengfuqian Jie (Street in Front of the Government Place) from three different aspects: politics, commerce and culture, and investigate the influence of historical change on custom. Based on this, this thesis is divided into five chapters:Chapter One introduces the origin of Shengfuqian Jie. As a place in which the government located, Shengfuqian Jie got its official name. In other words, the name of the street originates from politics, and changes with the period and the name of the government. From it, we can easily recognize the government that locates here in history.Chapter Two discusses the rise and fall of business or commerce in the street.In history, the government place is always accompanied with variety of commercial opportunities. With the appearance of such a street, Shengfuqian Jie gradually becomes a thriving commercial street, which in the following years experiences several essential historical periods, such as opening the ports, public-private co-management, and reform and open. Various commercial outlook and custom appear in different periods. The street eventually metamorphoses into one for civilians.Chapter Three describes various commercial custom. The management custom of different types of stores are categorized and introduced respectively. From specific instance we can find out the historical changes in Shengfuqian Jie.Chapter Four gives an introduction about the real life custom among the residents in Shengfuqian Jie. Through a vivid description about their custom in daily life, ceremony, and festivals, we can know the changes happened among civilians in their real life.Chapter Five discusses the situation before housing demolition and the process of housing demolition. With the transition of society, great changes also have happened in Shengfuqian Jie. The former neat and orderly old-style houses become a mess. Moreover, the reform and open policy brings out a lot of traditional stores, and both two sides of the street are crowed with variety of stalls. In order to keep the street clean and serious, the present government widens the street, builds the Green Belt, and prohibits the establishment of private stores. The street Shengfuqian Jie becomes a modern avenue.Chapter Six gives an analysis about the reasons of changes in Shengfuqian Jie.
