In recent years, with the development of globalization and the information of technology, modern service industry supported by science and technology and information network is producing constantly, and becomes the new light spot of modern city's development gradually. In this paper the author generalizes the concepts, characteristics, classification of modern service industry, summarizes the status and development of modern service industry in the domestic and foreign. On the basis of the theory of service industry and urban development, the influence of the modern service industry on the city economy, the spatial structure and the function and so on are obtained. Then the author takes Hangzhou as an example, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis, analyzes the current situation of modern service industry of Hangzhou and the effect caused by modern service industry on economy and space structure of the city. Modern service industry of Hangzhou not only promotes the development of urban economic development, optimizes the industrial structure, promotes employment, and expands the consumer area, but also supports the extension of urban space, accelerates the functional areas within the urban replacement, the formation and development of sub-centers, changes the single function of inhabitancy space. The unification of theory and practice makes clear that modern service industry not only promotes the development of urban economic development, but also affects the urban spatial structure changes. At the same time the research provides information for the future sustainable development of modern service industry and cities.
