China is the first country for discovering and utilizing tea in the world, which is playing a significant role in the world now; Since 1960s, Japan changed from a traditional country producing and exporting tea to a country importing it, which is now performing important functions in the world tea import market. Since 1980s, the Sino-Japanese tea trade has developed rapidly .While China gradually became the largest country exporting tea to Japan, Japan turned into the second tea export market of China. However, with the increasingly fierce competition between China and other traditional countries producing and exporting tea to Japan, especially for the green barrier which Japan set since 2001 has become main obstacle of Sino-Japanese tea trade, it is particularly necessary to research on the gap between China and other countries as well as to clarity the important impact of green barrier and advance some policy suggestions accordingly.Based on the statistic data relating to tea production and trade of China and Japan, the dissertation briefly introduced the roles they played respectively in the world, analyzed the evolution, current situation and characteristic of tea production and trade in the two countries, adopted CMS model to analyze the reason of Sino-Japanese trade growth, studied on the competitiveness of China and other tea export countries in Japan market through the analysis of P, G,QC, RCA, CA, adopted gravity model to make empirical analysis of the impact of Japan's green barrier on Sino-Japanese tea trade, and then advanced some policy suggestions.Research indicates that in the beginning of 21st century, China's tea trade has been developing rapidly, however it has been blocked by green barrier of developed countries. Since 1970s, due to the increase of demand and decrease of supply in domestic tea market, Japan's tea export was restricted; meanwhile, its import continued expanding. In the recent years, the decrease of tea market demand is the key factor leading to declining of Sino-Japanese tea trade value. In Japan market, the competitiveness of China's tea is high but is declining. Compared to green tea, red tea's competitiveness is relatively lower on market share, price and comparative advantage. While Japan's green barrier has distinct negative impact on Sino-Japanese tea trade, China's issuing of related laws and regulations did not redound to the development of it.
