At present, the liberalization of trade in services and economic globalization are constantly evolving, and the proportion of the service economy in the world economy and the economies of various countries is increasing. The world economy is gradually transforming from an industrial economy into a service economy, and international economic competition is gradually transforming into a service economy competition. The development of trade in services has become a trend. The strength of international competitiveness of trade in services has gradually become an important basis for the development level of a country’s trade. The comparison of the development of Sino-Japanese service trade has more important reference significance for China to accelerate service trade, enhance international competitiveness of service trade, and fully participate in global value chains. In the context of the outbreak of the COVID-19 in 2020,the signing of RCEP and the deepening of digital economic and trade cooperation, deepening China Japan service trade cooperation and building a service trade value chain in East Asia are important measures for China to smooth the external circulation of service trade. This paper takes global value chain participation as the main perspective, and based on existing data from the TIVA database(1995-2018),explores the size of the international competitiveness of the service industry in China and Japan from both theoretical and empirical perspectives from the perspective of global chain value. At the same time, combined with other control variables, this paper empirically studies the influence of service industry’s participation in global value chain on its international competitiveness. This paper is mainly divided into the following six parts: The first part is an introduction.Firstly,it introduces the background and significance of the topic selection, summarizes the relevant literature, and proposes the innovation and shortcomings of this article; The second part is theoretical mechanism analysis.Sort out the theories of participating in the global value chain and international competitiveness, and elaborate on the theoretical mechanism of the service industry’s participation in the global value chain based on Porter’s theory to enhance the international competitiveness of service trade; The third part is the current situation and comparison of the development of Sino-Japanese service trade.Study the current development status of service trade between the two countries from 2005 to 2021,and analyze the international competitiveness of service trade between the two countries from the perspective of total value. The fourth part compares the international competitiveness of Sino-Japanese service trade from the perspective of global value chains.Conduct research and analysis from the perspective of service trade participation in the global value chain, and compare the GVC participation index,GVC status index, and the new dominant comparative advantage index of Sino-Japanese service trade. The fifth part studies how China and Japan’s service industries participate in global value chains to enhance the international competitiveness of service trade.Using a two-way fixed effect model, the global value chain participation of the forward and backward service industry is used as an explanatory variable, the new revealed dominance index is used as the explained variable, using the four main factors of the Porter’s theoretical model and the other two auxiliary factors involved in the theoretical mechanism analysis in the second part as control variables, and analyzes panel data of eight segmented service industries in China and Japan from 2005 to 2018 based on the TIVA database. It is found that both forward and backward participation in the GVC of China’s service industry segments have a significant positive effect on improving the international trade competitiveness of the service industry, and China is currently more involved in the GVC division system through forward participation, playing the role of value output.Japan’s forward value chain participation in the service industry has a significant positive effect on improving the international competitiveness of the service industry,Backward value chain participation has a significant negative effect on the improvement of international competitiveness of the service industry, indicating that Japan mainly promotes the improvement of international competitiveness of the service industry by exporting intermediate products in the service industry. In theoretical mechanism analysis, the comparative advantages of China are reflected in the demand conditions and corporate strategies of the service industry, while the comparative disadvantages are human capital, related industries, and supporting industries. And the improvement of the international competitiveness of China’s service industry relies more on medium and low technology intensive service industries, while Japan relies more on high and medium technology intensive service industries.Part VI Conclusion and Policy Opinions.Based on the summary of empirical conclusions, propose countermeasures and suggestions for China to strengthen the development of the service industry and deepen service cooperation between China and Japan.
