Logistics has been highly regarded as the "third profit source of enterprises" by governments and enterprises all over the world and has developed rapidly. But owing to the outdate logistics concepts of forest engineering enterprises and the slow development of timber logistics in China, the efficiency of supply chain has been restricted. To study timber transportation, the location of logistics centers and other core issues of timber logistics system, mathematic programming and non-traditional arithmetic were systematically applied. With the adoption of advanced computer technology, network technology, and spatial information technology, a decision support system and information platform for optimization and mangement of timber logistics were desinged, which are propitious to improve the management level of timber logistics, reduce logistics cost and strengthen the integrated competitiveness of forest engineering enterprises.The developing and research history of logistics was analysed in order to get some ideas about optimization of timber logistics system. The research of timber location, route optimization and stock control were reviewed. The influences of forest road building, timber production model, and off-road and road transportation on environment were also reviewed from the view of eco-friendly timber logistics system. The perspective of optimization research on timber logistics system was proposed, optimization models of timber transportation were set up through the analysis of transportation optimum route and the distribution of timber flow. On the precondition of the principles of timber logistics centers location, the process of location was designed and its models were set up to minimize the cost of transportation and management. Genetic Arithmetic was applied to solve models. Based on the analysis of system target, demand, functions and datum, a proper GIS platform was compared and selected. The database, functional modules, software and hardware configuration, and network safety of timber logistics decision support systems was designed.The level of logistics scientific decision making and informationization of timber logistics system management should be improved to achieve systematic optimization. A solver to solve the models was desgned using a natural number repeated coding of Genetic Algorithm by Visual Basic programming language. ArcGIS was selected as the second exploitation platform. A decision support system for finding optimum route of timber transportation and allocating timber logistics center were desinged with the integration of the solver and the spatial analyzing function of the software. A WebGIS-based information platform was developed using ArcIMS as a tool to share the timber logistics information on line. Yongan Forestry Group was selected as case study for the application of platform.
