Research On China's Sub-regional Cooperation With ASEAN

China is taking the initiative in maintaining peace and promoting development through multilateral platforms. China attaches great importance to ASEAN's role during its participation in international and regional affairs. The two sides have constantly enriched and promoted their cooperation and established a partnership of good-neighborliness and mutual trust oriented towards the new millennium, but China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) is so large an area that it is hard to carry out the cooperation consummately at one time. In this background, a new method of cooperation is drawing the eyes of the world by its virtues, which is the sub-regional cooperation. The sub-regional cooperation usually involves only a part of the member country's territory, so it is openness, flexible, and easy to carry out. What's more, as the further development of the sub-regional area, it can promote the development of the neighboring areas, thus the whole CAFTA. So the sub-regional cooperation is really a good complementation to the development of CAFTAThe first part analyzes the economic trends both in the world and in the region, in the end comes to the conclusion that the environmental conditions are favorable for the implementation of the sub-regional cooperation.The second part introduces some basic information about sub-regional cooperation, and at the end of the chapter, attaches some sub-regional cooperation cases in Asia.The third part presents the relationship between China and Asia, and the importance of CAFTA to China both economically and politically. CAFTA is so large an area that it needs some sub-regional cooperation to develop first and then to promote the development of the whole area. The fourth part first introduces a successful sub-regional cooperation in ASEAN, which is GMS. Then further analyzes the establishment, the member countries, the achievements and the challenges of GMS.The cooperation of GMS can't carry out without support, especially the financial support. So at the end of the fourth part, there is a description of the Asia Developing Bank (ADB), which is supporting the development of GMS all the time.The implementation of sub-regional cooperation is still at the exploring phrase, so it is not so mature and perfect. The fifth part analyzes the potential risks in the sub-regional cooperation and gives some suggestions on its future development.
