Research On The Impacts Of Entrepreneur Traits On New Venture Performance

Entrepreneur traits have been long recognized as an important factor which impact new venture performance. This study divides entrepreneur traits into three dimensions, risk-taking propensity, need for achievement, locus of control, analyzes the direct impact of entrepreneur traits on new venture performance. And Based on the direct impact that entrepreneur traits on new venture performance, the article introduces goal orientation and analyses the direct and indirect impact of entrepreneur traits on new venture performance. The direct impact mostly analyses the relationship between new venture performance and risk-taking propensity, need of achievement and the locus of control. The indirect aspect analyses the impact that entrepreneur trait has on new business performance by the way of entrepreneur goal orientation.We analyzed the impact of the three dimensions, risk-taking propensity, need for achievement, and locus of control on the new venture performance in this article.in the direct impact,we posit that Entrepreneur risk-taking propensity will be posit relationship with new venture performance. Entrepreneurial need for achievement and internal locus of control will be positively related to new venture performance. The indirect impact of entrepreneur traits on new venture performance, we posit that: Entrepreneurial risk-taking propensity will be positively related to entrepreneurial goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability. Namely the higher of entrepreneurial risk-taking propensity, the stronger irritating of the entrepreneur goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability as motivation will be. Entrepreneurial need for achievement will be positively related to goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability. Namely the higher of entrepreneurial need for achievement, the stronger irritating of the entrepreneur goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability as motivation will be. Entrepreneur goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability will be positively related to the new venture performance. Namely the stronger irritating of the entrepreneur goal orientation and entrepreneurial ability will bring the higher venture performance for entrepreneurship.The results suggest : (1)The relationship between the three dimensions of entrepreneur traits and new venture performance is weak. Risk-taking propensity will display a curvilinear relationship with firm performance. While need for achievement and locus of control haven't prominent impact with new venture performance. (2) Although need for achievement and locus of control haven't prominent impact with new venture performance, they are positively related to entrepreneurial goal orientation. Namely need for achievement and locus of control impact the new venture performance through goal orientation. So simple entrepreneur trait wasn't sufficient to explain new venture performance. It because many traits were subordinate to behaviors of persons, so the explanation completely based on traits neglected the effect of the environment factors and entrepreneur goal orientation.
