With the rapid development of urbanization and industrialization, the demand for built-up land increased continually, especially in well-developed areas. This led to the conflict between land supply and land demand, and the conflict became more and more serious. The realization of built-up land's rational expanding asked for economical and intensive utilization. By choosing Shaoxing city as a typical area, the research on the spatio-temporal changes of built-up land and their driving forces were carried out. Firstly, this helped to provide the reasonable guidance for the scale and distribution of built-up land, so as to control its irrational expanding. Secondly, this brought benefit to sustainable land use while ensuring the rapid economic growth. In addition, this could also provide the important reference for further study on built-up land's change in the developed areas. The contents and corresponding results were mainly as follows:(1) The significances of doing research on the expanding of Shaoxing's built-up land and its driving forces had been discussed firstly. The proposal of building a social-economic factors model of land-use change had been raised secondly. So it's vital for us to carry out the comparative analysis on driving forces toward different types of land use.(2) With the help of quantitative characters and information entropy, the trend of built-up land's change in Shaoxing city, especially the timing differences and the spatial differences, were analyzed.(3) By choosing built-up land, residential and industrial land, and urban land as research objects, according to the social-economic factors model, the main driving forces affecting land changes of Shaoxing city were discussed. It showed that economic development had a great influence on the expanding of built-up land.(4) To make a comparison between scale growth of built-up land and the level of economic development, not only intensive utilization and efficiency of built-up land, but also the impact of economic development on the built-up land could be analyzed.(5) Finally, in order to make built-up land grow rationally, the thesis put forward some policy advices from the aspects of economy, traffic, people's living level, land exploitation and readjustment, technology and public participation.
