The growth and development of SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) greatly depend on the effective strategy. As the base of strategy, strategic orientation plays a vital role in the development of SMEs. Academic researches have confirmed that both the internal and external factors greatly effect the election of organizational strategy-orientation. In these former academic researches, they firstly focused on the external factors, namely, the environmental factors. However, with the increasing development of asset and ability theory, the internal factors, namely, the organizational factors have been more and more important. This paper will focus on the research of the leader's thoughts, one of the most significant characters of organizational factors, as well as the respective influences of the leader's thoughts on the election of strategic orientation.Firstly, this paper will begin with the review of the related former academic achievements on SMEs, leader's thoughts and strategic orientation. Based on the review, this paper will further explore the inevitable relationship of leader's thoughts and strategic orientation. Besides, this paper will conclude the major strategic problems during SMEs' development on empirical analysis, which further prove that only to choose the right strategic orientation can the SMEs solve their present problems thoroughly. Following that, this paper clarify the three different kinds of leader's thoughts models, including adaptable model, aggressive model and guiding model, as well as three respective strategic orientation types, namely, the assignment-orientation type, opportunity-orientation type and vision-orientation type. Moreover, this paper will further analyze the characters of SMEs' management on the premise of the three above-mentioned strategic orientations. Finally, this paper will focus on the detail methods to enhance the core competitive ability in three major aspects, including improving leader's quality, setting up mission statement and fostering corporate culture.This paper will divide into five chapters:The first chapter is executive summary, including research background, significance and framework.The second chapter is review of academic research, which will draw on the related achievements of leader's thoughts and strategic orientation theories.The third chapter is the analysis of strategic orientation of Chinese SMEs. This chapter will conclude the present problems that often occurred in the election of SMEs' strategic orientation on the base of situation analysis.The forth chapter will center on the relationship of leader's thoughts and strategic orientation in SMEs. Besides, it will conclude the three major leader's thoughts and their respective strategic orientation.The fifth chapter is about the transform of leader's thoughts to enhance the total core competitive ability. And this chapter will focus on the detail methods of leader's thoughts reform to enhance the core competitive ability.
