Nansi Lake is the biggest freshwater lake in northern China, including four connected lakes, Weishan Lake, Zhaoyang Lake, Dushan Lake and Nanyang Lake. With 53 rivers from the four provinces Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan and Anhui injected into the lake, the Nansi Lake covers a total area of 1,266 square kilometers and the basin area is as much as 31,700 square kilometers. Its fresh water takes up 47% of that in Shandong province. However, in recent years, the eco-environment of Nansi Lake was severely damaged due to natural and man-made calamities. The damage, such as the pollution of the water, the deduction of the marsh area, and the attenuation of the species, has adverse effect upon the life of people around as well as the lake.In 2003, the Nansi Lake is approved to establish provincial natural reserve, and it is now actively applying for the title of "National natural reserve". According to the principle of the natural reserve type and level partition released by State Environment Protection Administration and the National Technique Supervision Bureau., the Nansi Lake falls into the scope of marsh land eco-system. In recent years, Shandong provincial government has allotted funds to build the marsh area and protect the eco-environment, embodying the strategic thinking of controlling, protecting and developing the ecological resource there. It has brought a great opportunity for the ecological protection, building and development of the area. However, the comprehensive management of the Nansi Lake environment is considered from the perspective of environment protection and thus mostly belongs to the scope of restoration and control of the eco-system. Concerns from the field of humanity are always limited to the perspectives of culture, environment and economy. The author believes that, in order to protect and develop the area, we should strengthen the protection, building and development of the cultural ecology instead of merely natural ecology. The componential relationships of the cultural ecology theory, such as culture and environment, culture and economy, culture and politics, culture and folk customs, politics and economy, economy and education, education and folk customs need to be harmonious. It must be a harmonious direction to measure the building of eco-culture of the area through such a theory and will surely have a harmonious result.Aiming at helping the improvement of eco-environment and the development of cultural eco-tourism, this paper tries to give a detailed discussion of the present situation, ecological construction, cultural resources and tourism development of the Nansi Lake from the perspective of cultural ecology.
