Urbanization is the product of economic and social development, and the inevitable result of industrialization and modernization development. Urbanization level is an important symbol to measure the economic and social development level of a country or a region. At present, the urbanization level is increased rapidly in many regions of China, especially in developed regions. However, people over-emphasized on the "quantity" and neglected the "quality" upgrading, which resulted in many problems in the course of continuous urbanization development, such as inferior industrial grade, the extensive use of resources, decreased environmental quality, etc. This urbanizaton pattern will limit or even hinder the further development of urbanization.Firstly, the paper defines the patterns of urbanization and connotation of other related concepts, and sums up several types of existing patterns from different angles. Then through reviewing and analyzing present study situation of domestic and international urbanization patterns, it summarizes the basic theory of its developing patterns. Secondly, it takes Changshu City as an example to evaluate developing course and present situation features of urbanization objectively and analyze the concrete behavior of extensive urbanization developing patterns and existing problems in developed areas since reform and opening up. It also proposes trasforming background, goals and some specific measures of urbanization patterns. This paper draws some conclusions as follows: first, in the course of rapid urbanization development, extensive urbanization patterns in developed regions mainly show extensive landuse, low spacial optimization and incoordination among population growth, land expansion, economic output and urbanization development level, which results from extensive investment force; it puts forward that extensive urbanization patterns in developed regions should transform to intensive patterns, and proposes some measures such as decreasing per related landuse index, raising output in per unit land area, reducing environmental pollution, optimizing space and transforming the dynamic mechanism of urbanization.
