The Effects Of International Fragmented Production On Technology Structures Of China's Export

Along with China's rapid development of export trade, china's technology structures of export has become the focus of many researches. However, there's no consistent conclusion about whether the technology structures of China's export has been improved. Using revealed technological value-added (RTV) index , this paper gets the conclusion that the technology structures of China's export has been significantly improved since year 1992, and the most crucial determinant of this upgrade is the international fragmented production.By calculating the RTV index, this paper studies the overall technology level, the technology level structure distribution, the technical structure level as well as the export trade industry group of China's export, reaching the conclusion that the export share of China's high-tech export industries has increased since year 1992 while there has been no factor endowment reversal in China during this period. That means China's export technical structure has emerged an upgrade which is not consistent with the its situation of the factor endowment. In order to explain this phenomenon, the paper constructs three different measurement models to show the effects of the international fragmented production on technology structures of China's export. The results show that this special upgrade of China's technical exports structure is not a matter of the national technological progress or other factors, but a result of the international fragmented production.As a country where processing trade is an important trade pattern, China has been undertaking more low value-added production blocks of the technology-intensive industries with the development of international fragmented production, so that the export share of this country has also been increasing. Thus, the recent technology structures upgrade of China's export is just a kind of "image ".
