In modern management, performance management is becoming more and more important. There are plenty of theory and technology about performance management, such as cycle of performance management, KPI, KCI, 360°appraisal, BSC and so on. In practice, every company has their own character. We can say technology and theory is rich and mature enough, but the effect of the application in SMEs is so bad that performance management is becoming more and more impractical like ERP in many companies. Some people even think there is no need for SMEs to do performance management. But I believe that SMEs must do performance management, because for SMEs it is the key way to modernization of management. The key is that how to establish and apply system of performance management in SMEs that the basis of management is pretty bad. Because of difference of the style, the history, the status and the ability of employees, we can not copy the model of management from other companies. The best way to apply performance management is to do it based on the character of the company.This paper is the summarization of the author's experience in management consulting. I do not pay more attention to the technology or theory itself than the application of performance management in SMEs.
