In order to meet the requirements of the new competitive environment and to improve their competitive strength, more and more enterprises have set up the information management platform represented by the Enterprise Resource Planning (hereinafter referred to as 'ERP') system so as to enhance the comprehensive management level and to promote changes for corporate management. The implementation of ERP system is a sophisticated systematic engineering work. It covers the major business processes of the whole supply chain and its application will definitely have impact on the majority of the departments and staff. What it can bring will not only be the changes on the management platform and how people work but will also lead to the restructuring of organizational structure, the adjustment on human resource allocation and the business processes. It is a significant opportunity for corporate management changes. Many companies have put in huge amount of capital for ERP project implementation with little outcome. However, there are also a number of companies who have successfully implemented and are fully utilizing their ERP systems. The successes of these enterprises lie in their viewing the implementation process of their ERP systems as a process of coordinating, analyzing and optimizing the major business processes for corporate management. They have carried out changes and management innovation with this opportunity.A very important concept was incorporated in this seemingly simple way of implementation, which is a recently repeatedly mentioned concept in ERP implementation - Business Process Optimization. In fact, a main reason for the failure of many enterprises in their ERP system project implementation was because they regard the implementation of ERP system as simply a technical project without carrying out any optimization on their existing business processes. Some even simply computerize their existing manually managed business process. As a result, the effectiveness of ERP system can not be brought forth thus lead to system application failures. Therefore, in the process of ERP implementation, how to realize business process optimization is the key. This thesis gives a systematic analysis on the business process optimization of enterprises when they use ERP, covering Business Process Restructuring (hereinafter referred to as 'BPR') before the launch of ERP and the continuous improvement afterwards. At first, the thesis explains on the theories related to business process optimization by an elaboration on the theory of BPR according to the development history of ERP, it analyzes the theory of relativity of ERP and BPR. The ideas for continuous improvement such as PDCA and 6Sigma are also introduced.Secondly, methods and steps for BPR implementation are also put forward by a combination of process optimization theories and the practical conditions. In the end, a case study of the BPR project of company S is given to illustrate a detailed optimization process. Key business processes are also selected for contrasts and result analysis prior and after the optimization. The whole thesis provides reasonable suggestions for the business process optimization implementation of enterprises by combining theories with practices to accelerate corporate information automation so as to enhance their core competitive strength.
