Agglomerative economies promote the formation and evolvement of modern cities, and the transformation of urban functions is an important character of this evolvement. Urban functions are the role and the duty of cities in regional economic, which includes interior and exterior parts. This paper studied urban function upon industry structure in major cities of Yangtze Delta. And industry structure is one of main means to study urban functions. In order to satisfy interior demand, urban function becomes diversified, and to meet exterior demand, urban function becomes specialized. So that both diversification and specialization are appeared in a city. In order to prove this hypothesis, panel data of 16 cities in Yangtze Delta is used to analyze the correlation of characters of urban functions (diversified trend and specialized trend) and economic growth. Fatherly, upon the structural comparability of urban functions, several circles may be found in an urban system.Main conclusion include: In empirical analysis of Yangtze Delta, both diversification index and specialization index are increased. There is the positive correlation between two indexes and urban economic growth. This trend demonstrates interior and exterior demand are enlarged and extended.Meanwhile, taken urban rating into consideration, 16 cities in Yangtze Delta can be divided into several circles. And cities in same circle and in different circles have different competitive and cooperative relationships. Completive relationships are more apparent among cities in same circle, and cooperative relationships are more apparent among cities in different circles.
