After 30 years'reform and opening up to the outside world, agricultural economy developed rapidly in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province. Under the condition, it is necessary to innovate the training mode of new type farmers, quickening the development of modern agriculture in Zhangzhou City. On the basis of substantial first-hand information, this study summarizes the main training modes of new type farmers and puts forwards relevant policy suggestion in Zhangzhou City.The contents of the study include: (1) Guiding principles for establishing training mode of new type farmers; (2) major raining modes of new type farmers and their advantages and disadvantages; (3) training demand for new type farmers; and (4) countermeasures for constructing training mode of new type farmers.The study conducted a random sampling survey in eight counties, distributing 300 copies of the questionnaire. 169 of them were collected with a collection rate of 56.3% and 167 of them were valid. The results of the survey indicates: (1) farmers'first need is training in the technology of planting and breeding, and then is the training in commerce and industry, construction and transportation services of technical and entrepreneurial skills; (2) farmers need short-term free training in particular; (3) government agencies, agricultural technology promotion stations at all levels, play a leading role in farmer training; (4) training capacity and effectiveness should be raised; (5) farmers hope the government departments make training plan according to their actual needs; (6) farmers prefer "pioneer -led" training mode.This study proposes the following countermeasures: (1) to establish a diversified training system; (2) to cooperate with Taiwan in farmer training; (3) to reform training mechanisms, including dynamic mechanism, operational mechanism and supporting mechanisms; ( 4) to establish and improve four major support systems, i.e. the leadership and management system, law and regulation system, multiple investment system, and information network system; (5)to improve training quality; (6) to integrate and make full use of all resources available. The main conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)In the process of training new type farmers, five training modes including participatory training mode, demonstration training mode, project-driven training mode, hotshots and the media-based training mode were adopted in Zhangzhou City.(2)In view of the average education level of farmers is only seven years in Zhangzhou City, "pioneer led" training mode is recommended.(3)Optional training modes should be adopted flexibly according to local reality.Finally, the study suggests that further case study be conducted to perfect training mode and its evaluation index system.
