The structure of foreign trade is very important in one country's foreign trade. It reflects the level of foreign trade. Meanwhile, it also reflects the economic power of one country, development of domestic industry and situation of company's competitiveness to some extent. In the new period of our country's foreign trade development, our great goal is change from a big country to a strong country of foreign trade. Sino-US trade in 2008 amounted to 333.74 billion U.S. dollars, China and the United States are each other's largest trading partner. The structure of foreign trade between US and our country reflects the level of our foreign trade structure, the situation of competitiveness and the position in the international labour divide to some extend. Based on this point of view, the author writes this paper.This research is structurally divided into three parts. The first part includes introduction and literature review. This part shows the methodology and design of this research, reviews the research results of Sino-US foreign trade, summarizes the present theory related to trade structure and proposes goal and direction of foreign trade structure optimization. The second part is empirical part including chapter three and four. The author makes empirical studies on situation, commodity structure, comparative advantages and competitiveness and internal trade of Sino-US foreign trade. From international trade and geography perspectives, the author analyzes factors of Sino-US trade structure. The third part is conclusion including chapter five. In this part, the author summarizes the findings of the empirical study and proposes the strategic choices of development of internal and foreign trade. The content of each chapter is listed as follow:Chapter one is introduction. This part includes motivations, significance, main content of this research and related research in China and abroad.Chapter two mainly focuses on theoretical foundation and goal direction of foreign trade structure. Related theories include traditionally comparative advantage trade theory based on comparative advantages and factors, internal industry theory and dynamic trade structure optimization based on differences of product, scale economy and uncompleted competition. Moreover, the author gives the definitions to related terms.Chapter three is mainly about comparison between Chinese and American trade in commodity structure and competitiveness. In this chapter, the author analyzes the structure of commodity in the bilateral trade between the USA and China. Firstly, this paper reviews the history of Sino-US trade and evolvement of trade structure and analyzes the present situation of Sino-US trade. Secondly, this paper analyzes specific structure of commodity in Sino-US trade and respective advantage by using comparative advantage index and trade competitiveness index. Finally, this paper also analyzes structurally the situation of trade inside industry. By using SITC data, this paper calculates the internal industry trade index and concludes that both countries have a low development level of internal industry trade.Chapter four lists the main factors influencing structure of Sino-US trade. From international market, prices factors, multi-lateral and bilateral factors and geographic factors perspectives, this paper analyzes factors of Sino-US trade structure.Chapter five proposes suggestions for optimization of our country's trade structure. Based on analyses, the author proposes some suggestions for our country's foreign trade and internal industry trade. Finally, the paper explore the control mechanism of Sino-US trade.
