In the Pearl River Delta of radius less than 200 kilometers, there are compatible five airports in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Macao and Zhuhai. (Named as A5) Because of all sorts of historical reason, the overall positions and developments among each airport is short of tacit understanding and coordination, resulting in unavoidable competitions. The Macau International Airport (MIA) is generally acknowledged to be the smallest and weakest among the five airports. In recent years with the development of Macau's economy, both the passengers and cargos capacity of the MIA obtain a continued growth. However, with the intensification competition among the airports and the inexorable trend of the"Direct cross-strait three links", these will definitely influence MIA playing the role of acting as the agency of the"Direct flight"between the two sides. How will the MIA get along with all these challenges and competitions? Through the study of the current situations and developments of the international airports in the world, and the analysis of the development situation and competition of the five main airports in the Pearl River Delta, this article will try to find out a feasible development strategy suitable for the future development of MIA, to enable this relatively small and weak airport of Macau to survive and develop in this full of competitions Pearl River Delta. After analyzing, I think: the MIA needs reorientation. While striving to transit to be a destination airport, MIA also needs to change the role from being the transshipment between China and Taiwan to be the junction of China and Europe, China and USA, especially the transshipment station towards the Portuguese speaking countries. The future development objective of MIA is to be the Asian-Pacific area regional hub of low-cost airlines, and center for the regional private business jets. The future competitions between the airports are in forms of group competitions. The alliance trend of the airports will be an irresistible force. With a comprehensive survey of the five major airports in the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong and Guangzhou have already possessed the conditions to be the hub no matter in software or hardware. Therefore the author believes: the A5 have to regard Guangzhou and Hong Kong airports as the two hubs, forming a pair hub-spoke system, constructing the"A5 airports group" of the Pearl River Delta. Through negotiation and base on each one's own condition, with a clear orientation and reducing the internal attrition, fighting in concert with each other, taking the airports in the Pearl River Delta as a whole group so as to compete with the other group airports. On the other hand, the A5 should also speed up the development of the sea transportation between airports, enabling the speedy transship of passengers and cargos. At that time, the simplex pattern of all the aviation passengers and freight transportation depend on the conveyance by land will be changed, and will also enable the resource-sharing among airports.
