As the propulsion plant of ship, diesel engine masters the power running and ensures that the tasks such as patrolling, transportation and landing which should be finished under a safe circumstances. Ship diesel engine runs with a high malfunction rate for its complicate structure and the dreadful working condition. When keeping a sailing condition, the mainframe of a diesel engine ship could not easy to get necessary maintenance and indispensable accessories could not be renewed in time because of the narrow space of the engine room and the strict deadweight. Once a main engine was out of order and could not be repaired in a short time which could lead to the failure of the mission and even more it may result in accidents and personnel sacrifice and equipment loss. For the above mentioned reasons, nowadays, how to keep a ship diesel engine in a reliable working condition becomes a key point of researches. In modern times, to a certain extent, ship diesel engine could be designed and at the same time manufactured restricted to a reliable standard, however in fact the disregarded high malfunction rate of ship diesel engine should be blamed for the low management level, the less-advanced maintenance technology and the unscientific maintenance strategies. This paper bases on reliability theory and takes diesel engine of CUMMINS NTA 855 as an example, meanwhile used AMSAA (Army Materiel System Analysis Agency) model for data analysis. By collected statistics and detailed analysis and also supported by the researches on the characteristics of different diesel engine models, the paper tries to find the clear rules of malfunction and explains how the working condition gives affective changes to the reliability of the ship diesel engine. Due to the low level of maintenance management, this tractate attempts to find a solution to improve the maintenance management of ship diesel engine from three aspects, daily maintenance, reliability centered maintenance and personnel management, which are doomed to be put into practice for daily use.
