Urban Growth Study On Urban Growth Boundary

In recent years, urbanization in China has developed rapidly. Urban expansion features as rapidness, economic growth-oriented, extension type, occupation of farmland and other properties. So rational and proper measures must be taken to guide urban expansion towards healthy development. Urban space must should be allocated rationally in the premise of protecting natural resources and environment. Urban growth boundary management theory was first put forward by American experts and was applied successfully in the Regional Planning in the USA. The theory aims to clear the boundaries between urban and rural areas, protect farmland in surrounding areas, make full use of infrastructure and land. This theory has been one of popular studies in advanced city management. Therefore this paper focuses on how to apply this theory to the process of Chinese urbanization.Jiangbei District, located in the central part of Chongqing downtown, enjoys the advantages of transport, developed economy and advanced city equipment. As a result, it has become one of the core functional areas in the developed economic zone. It is the transport hub of Chongqing and is famous for the Cuntan Bonded Harbour Area and the Two-River District. Thus, it is now the business center, logistics, manufacturing base and high-tech industry area in Western China. Since Chongqing became a municipality, Jiangbei District has developed thrivingly. Therefore construction land has increased rapidly. the amount of urban construction land doubled from 1997 to 2008. and the average annual growth reached 10.8%. The next decade will be a critical period for Jiangbei District to maintain the rapid development. It has become a urgent issue on how to use the urban land efficiently in the process of urbanization, protect the local natural resources and ecological environment and control the urban expansion properly. Based on the analysis of control target of urban growth boundary, this paper evaluates the degree of urban expansion, determines the driving force of urban growth. Using the fixed-line analysis and quantitative analysis methods combined with GIS technology, this paper is in search of urban growth boundary so as to control urban expansion and promote the harmonious development of Jiangbei District.This paper includes six parts:Chapter one introduces the background information and signification of the research. It also introduces the content, methods, difficulties and forecasting novelty.Chapter two is the literature review. It introduces the research status at home and abroad from the aspects of urban growth boundary management theory, the development of urban growth boundary management theory, model theory and application.Chapter three introduces the goals of urban growth boundary management in Jiangbei District. The paper describes the natural conditions and socio-economic conditions of the status quo and tells the plan of development in this district and analyzes the goals of its urbanization. Therefore, the control target of urban growth boundary is evident from the above analysis.Chapter four analyzes urban growth factors in Jiangbei District. The paper analyzes the degree and structure of urban expansion in Jiangbei District by means of comprehensive methods. Based on the analysis, the driving force of urban expansion is determined. And it analyzes the driving force and resistance force of urban expansion.Chapter five analyzes the spatial orientation of urban growth boundaries.First of all, to designate prohibited construction districts of Jiangbei by the resistance factor,. Besides, limits should be set of the level of districts. Secondly, the driving force can determine the demand of construction land and the future development. Lastly, determine urban growth boundary in Jiangbei District by striking a balance between the driving force and resistance force.Chapter six is the conclusions and suggestions. The paper proposes conclusions and suggestions of the urban growth boundary management, and discusses difficulties, shortages and further research focus.
