The Interrelationship Study Of Social Norms And New Technologies

The focus of most of the current research is on the social norms on the selection of new technologies, little attentions are paid to the systematic analysis of the differences deriving from the long term and short term variations in their relationships, which, are the very issue that could systematically evaluate how a new technology in a short term, merge into the society and reduce the resistance wherefrom, or in the long term, the technology could break through the resistance from the social norms and bring about social benefits as soon as possible. This paper provides a comprehensive knowledge of how a new technology could survive and grow harmoniously in its interaction with the social norms.With theoretical speculation, empirical analysis and model construction taking into consideration, this research, based on Kaivan Mμnshi and kerloG's model, models are built for the short term and long term relationships between social norms and new technologies, with social norms being divided into cost-benefit function and reputation function, new technology into three types. Qualification analysis is employed to reveal the differences the relationships between social norms and various new technologies, and the practical implications presented by the relation data are manifested in the models.There is a balance or tension between social norms and new technologies in their long-term and short term interrelationship, which varies with the different periods of their interactions. In the short term, social norms are on the dominant side, with its strong constraints on the selection of the new technologies. While in the long run, new technologies could break through the restrictions from the social norms and in turn greatly promote the development of the social norms.
